Luke 13:6-9
This parable may be in direct relation to Leviticus 19:23-25 in which God commands that for the first three years of a tree’s life no fruit shall be eaten. The fourth year’s produce from the tree is to be dedicated to the LORD. But in the fifth year the fruit shall be eaten.
In the New Testament, Jesus speaks often of bearing fruit. In John 15:1-8 Jesus puts to light how He is the vine, His Father is the vinedresser, and we are the branches; every branch that does not bear fruit is cut away, but the branches that do bear fruit are trimmed to produce even more fruit. Jesus notes that no branch can bear fruit unless it abides in Him and that by bearing fruit His Father is glorified.
This is a command to bear fruit in Christ Jesus.
This is a command to be active in sharing our testimony and the Gospel of Jesus and the kingdom of heaven.
As God’s children, we should bear fruit for Jesus. The Apostle Paul proclaims in Galatians 5:22-25 that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This is the fruit that we, as Christians, should be producing. These are the things that we as Christians should be striving for in our lives as we seek to be pleasing to the LORD and to bring glory to Him through our lives. Matthew 3:10 states that every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Let’s abide in Jesus and bear the fruit that is rooted in the tree of life as is found in Him (John 15:1-8) so that we will glorify our Father in heaven.
Dear Lord,
You are truly the vinedresser, and as we grow in our relationship with You, please trim each of us as Your branches so that we will all grow and reach into the lives of others in producing the fruit that is produced only through salvation in Jesus, that we would bring glory to You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
