Luke 14:7-11
Jesus teaches a parable of being invited to a wedding feast and the importance of humility in choosing one’s place of seating at the banquet. In ancient times the most prominent people were given the best seats that were the closest to the host of the event. The further away one sat from the host, the less honorable one was considered to be.
Jesus says to choose the less prominent seat in that the host may move you to a more honorable place. As you are moved by the host to a better position, that you will be glorified by the host in the presence of all those in attendance (Luke 14:10). Jesus says that this is better than to seat oneself in the most prominent seat and then be shamed by being moved to a lower position (Luke 14:8-9). Jesus ends this teaching by saying that if one exalts oneself, he will be humbled; and one who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 14:11).
This is a command and example to present oneself with humility.
This is a promise that showing humility will be rewarded with glory.
The lesson in this passage is to put away pride and arrogance, which is of the sinful nature, and put on humility in Christ Jesus. To draw closer to Jesus we must do so with humility in recognizing the need for Him in our lives; we must realize that our purpose in life is to bring glory to God by exalting Him in our lives. This cannot be accomplished in and of ourselves in our sinful nature which is not capable of pleasing God and bringing glory to Him. The only way in which we can bring glory to God through our lives is to accept the gift that He offers to us in His Son Jesus. We must present ourselves humbly to Jesus and choose the lower position in that He will bring us closer to the host; that He will bring us closer to God. Through our humble submission to Jesus, He will bring us glory that will be reflected through our lives and bring glory to Him.
Dear Lord,
Please give us the strength to present ourselves humbly to You in seeking Your will for our lives. In this we are glorified through Your Son Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
