Luke 14:12-14
Jesus speaks to this man about the condition of his heart. He says that when he gives, he should give from the heart to those who are in need. Jesus teaches that blessing will come from giving to those who cannot repay, for this is true giving from the heart; not expecting to be repaid.
This is an example of giving from the heart.
This is an example of giving that will result in receiving blessing from God.
We like to give banquet dinners for our family, friends, and loved ones. There is nothing wrong with this type of activity in our lives, however, in this passage Jesus is speaking of giving as an offering to God. In James 2:1-13 we find a good example of this type of giving without showing partiality. Jesus gave a new commandment to love our neighbor as He has first loved us in John 13:34-35. This love is to be given from the heart without expecting to receive something in return. This type of attitude does not show greed, self-centeredness, pride, or arrogance. This type of attitude is reflective of the attitude of Christ Jesus that is sincere, pure of heart, and generous in sharing the gifts that God has given us with others.
Dear Lord,
Please help us to have the heart of Jesus that is seeking the needs of others, that we would be generous with sharing the gifts that You have blessed us with so that the needs of everyone will be met through the love of Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
