Luke 13:1-5
These people are asking Jesus about the spiritual lives of those who were killed by Pilate (the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate). Their assumption is that these people must have been very bad sinners or God would have spared them from the hand of Pilate.
The response that Jesus gives is that there is no rank structure in sin. The Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 3:23 that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Jesus is teaching these people that they should not view sin as one being a better or worse sin than another, but that sin is sin and each person should be concerned with repenting of the sin in their lives or else they will perish without receiving His forgiveness and eternal life that is found only in Him (John 3:16-17; 14:6).
This is an example that all sin is corruptible and needs forgiveness through Jesus.
This is a command to not rank sin, for the wages of all sin is death (Romans 6:23a).
This is a command and promise that repentance is necessary for the forgiveness of all sin.
Satan tries to blind us to our own sin by getting us to focus on the sins of those around us as we try to sanctify ourselves by condemning others. We like to say to ourselves, “I’m not as bad as they are.” But the truth is that we are to be concerned for our own sin, for our own sin is the only sin that we can be forgiven of. Our own sin is the only sin that will get us cast out of the presence of God if we do not repent and ask forgiveness from Jesus, the one who can grant forgiveness and eternal life. Focusing on the sins of others does not or will not remove the sin in our own lives (Matthew 7:1-5).
Dear Lord,
Please help us to see that focusing on the sins of others will not make our own sin go away. Please help us to humble ourselves to You in repentance of our own sin so that we can then lead others to You by our example of how Your great love is reflected through our lives in bringing You glory. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to be the Savior of the world so that we all may receive forgiveness through Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
