Luke 13:10-13

Jesus often taught in the synagogues on the Sabbath, and Jesus often healed people of their infirmities. In this passage, Jesus defies the law given to Moses by doing work on the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8-11).  In being the Messiah, Jesus came to fulfill the law which was given to Moses (Matthew 5:17). Jesus is showing in this passage that He is that; the fulfillment of the Law.

In the Old Testament, the Israelites put their faith in following the Law that was given to Moses by God (Exodus 19). The Law was given to show man his insufficiencies in that he is incapable of keeping the Law in his sinful nature. What the Law could not do because of man’s weakness, God has done through His Son Jesus and continues to do through His Holy Spirit that He sends to live within those who will believe in Him (Romans 8:1-11).

This is an example that Jesus was sent to set us free from our infirmities so that God may be glorified through our lives.

This is an example that we have moved out of the Old Testament and into the New Testament just as Jesus sets us free from the old ways of the sinful nature and gives us new life in Him.

The ministry of Jesus is to show us that He was sent to be the fulfillment of the Old Testament. The ministry of Jesus is to show us that we are to stop trying to do or earn our salvation, but to put our trust in Him, that He will heal us of all our infirmities. The ministry of Jesus is found in the New Testament, and new life is found only in Him (John 14:6).

Jesus gives us many examples of moving from the old to the new; He gives us many examples of His power to heal a person from their infirmities; He also gives us many examples of His desire to heal our hearts and set us free from sin. Put your trust in Jesus today, and He will heal your heart too!

Dear Lord,

Please open our eyes to Your Word so that we may see You leading us out of the old and into the new. Please open our eyes so that we may see Your healing power at work in the lives of those around us and so that we can experience the healing of our own hearts through salvation in Your Son Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
