Luke 13:34-35
In this passage Jesus is proclaiming His sorrow for God’s chosen city of Jerusalem, but not as the city itself, but for God’s chosen people that make up the city in their refusal to accept Jesus as the Messiah that they had been long awaiting. He longs to gather His chosen people (Jerusalem/Israelites) together in His kingdom as a mother hen gathers her young under her wing (Luke 13:34), but they were unwilling to believe in Him. The result is the fall of Jerusalem due to the Israelites disobedience.
Jesus ends this passage and His teaching in this synagogue (Luke 13:10) by teaching the people that they will not see Him again until they will be found quoting Psalm 118:26, which speaks of “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!” as Jesus states in Luke 13:35. Some scholars say that this is a reference to Palm Sunday (Luke 19:28-38), but the Palm Sunday reference is a celebration, and in this instance (Luke 13:34-35) the attitude is downcast as if a possible reference to the second coming when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:5-11).
This is an example of the hardness of people’s hearts toward Jesus.
This is a promise and example that one day everyone will proclaim Jesus to be Lord and Savior (even those who never accept Jesus as Lord and Savior will come to this realization when it is too late as they are being cast out of heaven for eternity.)
This passage shows us how powerful the grasp of Satan can be on a person while we live in a fallen world in which he uses to blind us to the way, the truth, and the life that God has given us in His Son Jesus. The people of Luke 13:34-35 were there with Jesus and witnessed Him perform many miracles, and still yet refused to believe in Him as the Messiah. The story is no different today as God speaks to our hearts through His Holy Spirit calling us to believe in Jesus and submit our will to seeking His will for our lives and live the life that He has truly created us to live. We cannot break the chains of Satan on our own; we need the help of the only one who has already defeated him; we need the help of Jesus.
Dear Lord,
Many times, we are brought to You through sorrow and tragic events in our lives. Please help us to see that Your ways are greater than our ways and we do not always have to know why You allow the things in our lives that we cannot understand or control. Please help us to see that the grasp of the sinful nature on our lives has been broken through the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and ultimately in His resurrection, and that we can truly submit our lives to You and begin a new life through Jesus in seeking Your will for the life that You have created us for. Please give us the courage to seek Your purpose for our lives in Christ so that we can bring glory and praise to You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
