Luke 19:41-44
There are three times in the New Testament in which Jesus wept (Luke 19:41; John 11:35, and Hebrews 5:7). As we study God’s Word, there are times in which things concerning God/Jesus happen in threes. I believe this is significant to the Holy Trinity; (1) for the Father, (2) for the Son, and (3) for God’s Holy Spirit. The recording of Jesus weeping in Luke 19:41 is one such occasion. Jesus wept (John 11:35) at the death of Lazarus. This shows the importance of the personal relationship that God desires to have with each of us through His Son, our Savior, who was sent for each of us to give us life in Him. Jesus does not want to see us die without Him being there with us to take us into eternal glory with our Father in heaven.
Jesus wept (Luke 19:41) as He viewed His holy city Jerusalem from a distance. Since the time of king David, this city has been the center of His relationship with His chosen people Israel and where they were required to come to worship Him during all the religious ceremonies given in the Old Testament Law. As Jesus weeps over Jerusalem, He saw a lost city that has rebelled against the Law and sought their own ways in worshiping idols as they have, even in the temple worship and the leaders of the Law, turned away from Him. This shows the importance of God’s desire to have a relationship with His children and to be honored and worshiped as the one and only true God of heaven. He has given direction and guidance to His chosen people whose purpose was to show the rest of the world the blessings that He will give them if they will choose to follow Him. But in this, the opposite is showing the world what will happen if they choose to not follow Him, which is what has taken place in Jerusalem and caused Jesus to cry. The guidance that God gave through Moses is found in Deuteronomy 28.
The third time Jesus wept (Hebrews 5:7) was as He prayed to His Father in heaven in preparation for going to the cross and bearing the sins of humanity on Himself. This shows God’s love for humanity in placing the weight of all sin on the obedience of His Son who came to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17).
Jesus is recorded in the New Testament crying three times: once for the Father, once for the Son, and once for His Holy Spirit. He cried because humanity, including each of us, has rebelled against Him. Jesus came to restore the relationships of each of us to our Father in heaven. He is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no other way to our Father in heaven except through inviting Jesus to live in your heart through His Holy Spirit and cleanse you of sin (John14:6). The Father desires it, the Son made it possible, and His Holy Spirit guides us through it.
This is an example of God’s love for us.
This is an example of the spiritual battle that goes on in each of us; the battle that Satan wages on our souls to prevent us from having the desired relationship with our Creator that we were created for.
This is an example of God’s ultimate plan of salvation in His Son Jesus.
Jesus came to save God’s chosen people Israel from sin. In doing this and showing the world the example of following Him, He was rejected by His chosen people Israel and sent to the cross to die. In His sinless death and being unworthy of death because death is the penalty for sin (Romans 6:23a) and Jesus was without sin; death could not hold Him.
God is the giver of life. The life that God gave to Adam and Eve was eternal until sin broke in and stole it from them. We inherited sin through them, and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23a), but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23b).
The example of God’s chosen people Israel being chosen was to represent to the rest of the world that He is the One and only true God and that life is found in obedience to Him. It is now fulfilled through the resurrection of His only begotten Son, who in His death died to sin but in His resurrection overcame sin and now offers eternal life to everyone as was God’s original intent.
God is love, and love can only be offered to another in completing the cycle of love, which is God (1 John 4:7-16). We have a choice to accept the love that God has offered to us in His Son Jesus, or to rebel against it. I pray you will choose Jesus, and in so doing choose life eternal and submit yourself to Him and bring the glory to Him that you were created for (Ephesians 1:3-14).
Dear Lord,
Jesus wept for us three times recorded in Your Word, and all three times were due to the infiltration of sin. Please help us to see that Jesus came to save the world from sin and that we must accept Him in our lives in complete submission to Your will for our lives that gives the true life and purpose that You have created each of us for. Thank You for Your great love for each of us in that You would continue to seek us and provide a way out of our sinful lives and into eternal life in heaven with You. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to save us so that we may be restored to a proper relationship with You through Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
