Luke 24:36-43

The two disciples that saw Jesus on the road to Emmaus have returned to Jerusalem and met with the eleven disciples that were closest to Jesus along with others who have gathered with them. As they share in their excitement of Jesus being risen from the dead, He (Jesus) appears with them once again and gives them a blessing of peace (Luke 24:36). The disciples were terrified as if they had seen a ghost, but Jesus showed them His hands and feet and encouraged them to touch Him to see that He was real and not a ghost as He questioned their doubts about Him (Luke 24:37-40). Then Jesus asked them for some food, and receiving it, He ate it in their presence in proof that He was truly risen from the dead.

This is an example, promise, and the fulfillment that Jesus would be raised from the dead on the third day (Luke 9:21-22, 43-45, 18:31-34).

Jesus died for our sins, but without His resurrection in defeating death, sin, and Satan once for all, salvation would be lost. Because He died for us, through His resurrection He gives us life that we should live to God in newness of life in Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul explains this in Romans 6.

Dear Lord,

It is only through Jesus that we may receive newness of life through what He has done for us on the cross and in being raised from the dead on the third day. Please open our eyes, hearts, minds, and souls to this truth of life in Jesus – the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
