Luke 24:28-31

As these two disciples walked and talked with Jesus, they came to their destination and invited Jesus to stay with them for the night because it was getting late. Jesus accepted their invitation and as they sat to eat, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Then, the text says that their eyes were opened. They did not reveal Jesus to themselves because they were not able to, but Jesus revealed Himself to them just as He reveals forgiveness to us through what He has done for us. They did not open their own eyes to see Jesus; He opened their eyes because they believed in Him. After this, Jesus vanished from their sight.

This is an example that Jesus will abide with us if we will invite Him to do so.

This is a promise and example that as Jesus revealed Himself to these disciples during His earthly ministry and they believed in Him, even when we feel that He is not near us as these disciples did on the road to Emmaus, He will reveal Himself to us sometimes when we least expect it.

Jesus began His earthly physical ministry by showing signs and performing miracles that indicated His purpose for being sent by His heavenly Father. As Jesus makes one of His few post resurrection appearances, He walks with these two disciples on their journey as He will walk with us on our journey through life on earth, even when we don’t feel like it. He will teach us all about Himself through the Scriptures and His Holy Spirit which He has promised to be our guide (John 14:15-18, 16:5-15). A very big key to this, and is found in Luke 24:29 is that we must ask Him to abide with us, for He will not force Himself upon us – He will present Himself to us as He did to these two on the road to Emmaus, and He offers us to learn about Him through the Scriptures (which are available to us all if we will open our Bibles and study them), but the Love (Jesus) of God is a gift, and a gift can be accepted or discarded – the choice is ours. We can accept Christ Jesus by inviting Him to abide within our hearts and be our guide through His Holy Spirit which He will send to live within us upon our acceptance of Him if we will do one simple thing – ask!

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this passage of Scripture that shows us that Jesus will abide with us if we will not overlook the obvious and simply with a sincere heart – ask. He has taken our sins to the cross and paid our penalty for them; He has presented Himself to us through Your Word and He calls us to Him through Your Holy Spirit. Please open our eyes to salvation in Your Son Jesus as You have opened the eyes of His disciples in this passage of Scripture that we have studied today. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
