Luke 19:28-40
Jesus has just finished teaching a parable about a nobleman who had went away for awhile and then returned. Jesus then instructs some of His disciples to go into the village where they will find a colt that had never been ridden (Luke 19:30-31). They were to take the colt and tell anyone who may question their actions that it is for the Lord. In 1 Kings 1, in the anointing of king Solomon to follow king David, he was to ride on the king’s mule in the procession. In Luke 19 Jesus rides on a colt that has never been ridden; a true sign for the King of Kings.
As Jesus rode on the colt and neared the descent of the Mount of Olives, the people spread their outer garments on the road. Picture if you will the colorful carpet in which Jesus came into town on: a red carpet if you will, but a carpet of many colors as if to represent His coming to save all the people of the world; red and yellow black and white, they are precious in His sight (a line from a song that I was taught along side of Jesus Loves Me, another popular song taught in Sunday School classes for young children).
All the people began to rejoice and give praise to God as the prophecy of Psalm 118:26 is fulfilled. The Pharisees were offended by the people referring to Jesus as “King,” and in reply Jesus states that if the people kept silent from giving this justly due praise to Him, the stones would immediately begin crying out (Luke 19:40).
This is the Triumphal Entry.
This is the event that we celebrate on Palm Sunday.
This is the celebration of “The King is coming!”
Even with the Pharisees in contempt of this procession honoring the “King of Kings,” the almighty power of God shines through in honor of His one and only Son who came to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17). Jesus still reigns as the “King of Kings” amidst all the controversy of today.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for this procession in announcing Jesus as the “King of Kings” as He makes His way into the city of Jerusalem to make the ultimate sacrifice for humanity; that He would humbly submit to death on the cross so that we may live through Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
