Luke 3:23-38
Many of these names in the line of the genealogy of Jesus through His mother Mary’s husband Joseph are famous men of the Bible throughout the Old Testament, many are not. There is also the absence of some famous kings of the Old Testament such as Solomon, the son of King David. The names of Moses to whom the Law was given from God, and Joseph who wore the famous “coat of many colors” and saved the Israelite people from extinction are not part of this account.
The path of this genealogy traveling where it may and through whom it may, travels throughout the history of man and to the first man Adam. This is the important fact of the genealogy of Jesus because as Jesus was sent to save the world from sin and pay the price to sin as the worthy, perfect sacrifice for all of sin, He must be traced back to the first man, Adam, through which sin entered the world.
Jesus was conceived through God’s Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary (Luke 1:26-38) and was, as we may say “adopted” by Joseph. Jesus died on the cross and paid the price for our sins so that through Him we may be “adopted” “as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:5b-6, NKJV). I suggest reading Ephesians 1:3-14 as this entire passage exemplifies “adoption” and includes the following lines; “in Christ, He chose, in Him, by Jesus Christ, to Himself, of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, He made, In Him, His blood, His grace, He made, His will, His good pleasure, He purposed, in Himself, He might gather together, in Christ, in Him, In Him, according to the purpose of Him, His will, His glory, In Him, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” It’s all about Him! It’s all about Jesus!
This is the genealogy of Jesus being traced throughout all of humanity and to the origin of man.
This is the example that as Jesus was adopted into humanity, through Him humanity is adopted to God.
Jesus was and is spiritually pure. Man, since the fall of the first man Adam, is spiritually unclean. The spiritual purity of Jesus meets the requirement to fulfill the Old Testament Law that God gave to Moses. The Apostle Paul states in Romans 3:21-26, “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. Fort there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” He goes on to proclaim in Romans 5:18-21, “Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
“Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Dear Lord,
The words of Jesus that are recorded in John 14:6 ring out to humanity, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Please help us all to hear these words so that we would open our hearts to Him and receive Your forgiveness. Thank You LORD for salvation in Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
