Luke 22:14-23
In this passage Jesus sets down with His twelve apostles to eat the Passover. Jesus teaches His apostles that He has “fervent desire” (Luke 22:15) to have this meal with them, which shows His desire to fulfill His Father’s will to accomplish the mission in which He was sent. Jesus took the elements (bread and cup/wine) and gave thanks to God for them and then gave them to His disciples. He also notes that He will not partake of the Passover feast until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God (Luke 22:18). Jesus told the apostles that the bread was His body which is given for them (Luke 22:19) and that the cup is the new covenant in His blood, which is shed for them (Luke 22:20). Jesus ends this passage by telling His disciples that the one who betrays Him is sitting at the table with them and that He accepts His predetermined role, but deep suffering awaits the one who will betray Him.
This is the Last Supper.
This is the event in which we follow in communion.
This is Jesus taking the place of the sacrificial Passover Lamb.
As we prepare ourselves to take communion, this is the story in which we should be thinking of as Jesus prepares Himself to become the sacrificial Lamb of the Passover feast. The blood of the lamb was to be placed on the lintel (top door support) and doorposts of every believer’s house, but the blood of Jesus would be placed on the cross in a similar location to that of the lintel and doorposts if overlaid. This is the preparation of Jesus to die for our sins and the sins of all man; this is the mission in which He was sent (John 3:16-17).
Dear Lord,
Thank You for the events of the Last Supper that ties Jesus to the Passover lamb and signifies His death on the cross in which His blood shed would be acceptable for the required sacrifice being pure and sinless that would pay the price for all sin that we may be set free from the punishment of sin by believing that Jesus paid the price for us. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
