Luke 22:24-30
As Jesus sat with His twelve apostles at the table where they had just finished partaking of the bread and wine, the apostles began discussing which of them would be considered the greatest (Luke 22:24). Jesus explains to them that serving one another in humility is the one who is the greatest. Jesus teaches them that He came to serve, and as He is in the position to be served, He yet humbles Himself to serve (Luke 22:25-27).
He also notes that as the apostles have continued with Him through His trials, He will give them a kingdom that they may eat and drink at His table in His kingdom as He sets them on thrones where they will judge the twelve tribes of Israel (Luke 22:28-30).
This is a command that to be great in the eyes of God is to serve others.
It is odd to us that to be considered great we must humble ourselves to servanthood, but this is the difference between the sinful nature that we all are born with and the desired nature in Christ Jesus that God has created us for. This is found even in the Law of the Old Testament given to Moses. Take a moment to read the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 5:1-22) and notice how they are all in humility to God first, and then in respect (service) to one another.
God designed us to all work together to be to the praise of His glory. We can only accomplish this if we are working together serving one another. No one sits at the top to be served – that’s God’s place. One thing that makes this all possible is Jesus; it is impossible to understand this concept without first serving Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Dear Lord,
We must strip ourselves of pride, arrogance, and self-centeredness to gain the attitude of a servant. Jesus is our Lord and Savior and He came to serve (Luke 22:27). Please help us to see that we can only take on the attitude of servants in Your eyes by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior and making a commitment to serving Him first. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
