Luke 12:35-40

Jesus teaches a parable instructing servants to be on the ready at all times to receive their master when he returns. That they will be ready and waiting to open the door when the master returns. Jesus says that blessed are those who will be ready and watching for the return of their master (Luke 12:37). Jesus teaches His disciples that if a man knew when a thief was going to break into his house, he would be ready for him at that hour (Luke 12:39). Jesus says that His return will be like this, at an unknown hour (Luke 12:40).

This is a command to be ready for Christ’s return.

This is a promise that Jesus will return at an unknown hour.

This is a promise of blessing for those who will be ready and watching for Jesus to return.

Many people believe that they have it all figured out. That they will continue living in the sinful nature until just before they die. But this is a deceitful plan of Satan in his attempt to keep those away from a relationship with God through His Son Jesus who is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). Jesus will come like a thief in the night (Luke 12:39-40) and those who are not ready and watching may not have time to make things right. They may be lost to the torments of Satan for eternity. And they will certainly not be allowed to experience the wonderful life of salvation in Christ Jesus and share that with others.

Our hearts are continually searching for something, and Satan thrives on keeping us searching without finding true heartfelt satisfaction. Jesus prompts us through His Holy Spirit to seek Him, and Satan tries to fill our minds with everything except Jesus and that we can fulfill the longing of our hearts with something other than Jesus. But Satan is the father of lies and is only capable of lies (John 8:44). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Seek Jesus, repent of sin, and accept a new life in Christ Jesus today and you will find the fulfillment that your heart is seeking.

Dear Lord,

Satan is stronger and smarter than us. He will strive to keep us away from having a relationship with You as is his only goal. Please help us to see that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and that we must invite Jesus into our hearts to defeat the grasp that Satan has on us. Please help us to see that Satan keeps us living a lie, and that Jesus will break the grasp of Satan on our lives and give us freedom of spirit and life eternal if we will repent (turn) from a life of sin and invite Jesus into our hearts to begin a new life of forgiveness – in Christ Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
