Luke 12:41-48

In Luke 12, Jesus has taught His disciples to fear (respect) God (Luke 12:4-7) and to confess Jesus before others (Luke 12:8). In return He will confess them before the angels of God (Luke 12:9). He has taught his disciples to not build up treasures of earthly things, but to put their focus on the treasures of heaven (Luke 12:16-21). Jesus has taught His disciples to not worry about what they will eat, or the clothes they will wear (Luke 12:22-23), but that they should seek the kingdom of heaven and all these things will be added to them (Luke 12:31).  Jesus has promised blessing for those who are living in readiness and watching for His return (Luke 12:35-40). And in Luke 12:41-48 Jesus speaks of the faithful and wise steward who is living his or her life with the lessons from these teachings being present. Jesus states in Luke 12:43 that such a steward will be blessed. Jesus also proclaims that the unfaithful steward will have a most unfavorable outcome (Luke 12:45-47). This punishment will be greater than that of one who has no knowledge of Jesus because the one who has the knowledge of God’s will and chooses to not follow it is directly denying God’s authority in their lives (Luke 12:45-48).

This is a command to be active in seeking God’s will for one’s life.

This is a promised blessing for those who are continually seeking God’s will for their lives.

This is a promised punishment for those who know God’s will and do not apply it in their lives.

This is why we need to study God’s Word and spend time with Him in prayer each day; He teaches us the ways in which we should conduct ourselves as His children. He teaches us through His Son Jesus what it means to be a Christian. He teaches us to keep our focus on Him and He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

When we accept Jesus as our Savior and invite Him to live in our hearts through His Holy Spirit, we are accepting to follow what he teaches us in His Word. This means that we are going to live an active life as a child of God. Jesus taught His disciples in Matthew 28:18-20 that He has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. He then teaches them that they should make disciples of all the nations and baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He says that we should be taught to observe all things that He has taught and that He will be with us always, even to the end of the age. I pray that He will give each of us the strength and courage to follow His will for our lives.

Dear Lord,

There is much to be learned from Your Word. We can and should spend all of our lives continuously learning and growing in our relationship with You through study of Your Word, fellowship with other Christians, time in prayer with You each day, and sharing Your will for our lives with others. Please give each of us the strength and courage to shun the sinful desires of this world and put on a new life in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, through whom we can accomplish all things. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
