Luke 12:32-34

Jesus teaches His disciples that their Father in heaven finds good pleasure in giving the kingdom of heaven to them. He instructs them to sell their earthly possessions and give to the poor (give alms), (Luke 12:33). Things which do not grow old are the treasures of heaven which no one can steal, nor can they decay or wither. Jesus instructs His disciples that whatever is a treasure to them is also where their heart will be. The point that Jesus is making known to His disciples is to put their trust in heavenly treasures; to focus on the things of heaven because where their hearts are is the inner truth and sincerity of heart that God requires in becoming a child of God (John 1:12-13; 4:23-24).

This is a command to not allow fear into our lives.

This is a command to put our focus on the treasures of heaven.

This is a command to care for the poor.

This is a command to put others before ourselves.

This is a command to have a pure and sincere heart to our Father in heaven.

Perfect love (the love of God shown to us in sending His one and only Son to pay our price to sin) casts out fear (1 John 4:18-19). If we put our focus on Jesus and the gifts that our heavenly Father gives us in the salvation found in Him, we will have no fear. Yes, we will still have concerns for our families and love ones, along with the things of life that are important to us. But fear is of Satan and when our concerns become our fears, we need to give them to Jesus and let go of the bondage of fear, in that, this is a war in which God’s Holy Spirit will help us to overcome if we will put our sincere trust in Him. Jesus teaches us to not fear (Luke 12:32), to take care of the poor (Luke 12:33), and to put our focus on the things of heaven (Luke 12:33).  Jesus teaches us why we should do this; because where our treasure is, so will be our heart (Luke 12:34).

God does not want our superficial focus, which is truly no focus at all. But God desires our hearts, that He may dwell within our hearts and have our deepest, most sincere parts to be focused on Him. If we will submit our lives to Him, He will guide our every step and cast out all our fears (1 John 4:7-19).

Dear Lord,

Fear is a tough thing to overcome and is a grasp of Satan on our lives. Please help us to put our focus on the things of heaven and trust in Jesus so that we can give our fears to Him and submit to Him in love; the love that is found only in Him that casts out all fear. You long for our hearts and our hearts have an everlasting longing for You. Please help us to see that the constant longing and searching of the things of this world is only fulfilled by searching out the things of heaven; by seeking and submitting to Your great love that is only found in our Savior Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
