Luke 11:29-32

Luke 11 began with the disciples of Jesus asking Him to teach them how to pray, and Jesus gave them the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1-4). Jesus then teaches His disciples to be persistent in prayer and to ask, seek, and knock in coming to God in prayer with their needs (Luke 11:9-13). God is faithful and will hear our sincere prayers as we seek His will for our lives. Jesus ends this section of Scripture by noting that we, in our evil nature, know how to give good gifts to our children; how much more God will give His Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). The passage then transitions to Jesus healing a person of an evil, unclean demon and He teaches the importance of His power over Satan in that He can and will evict Satan and his demons from the lives of those who put their trust in Him. And in doing so, Jesus teaches the importance of keeping our focus on Him to prevent Satan from returning into our lives (Luke 11:14-26). This teaching then fulfills Scripture with the never-ending blessing on Jesus’ mother Mary, and the even greater blessing proclaimed by Jesus on all those who hear God’s word and keep it (Luke 11:27-28).

Jesus speaks of God giving His Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13) and then He shows His power over the evil, unclean demons of Satan by casting one out of a person (Luke 11:14-26). He then tells of how that evil, unclean demon of Satan will return with seven stronger demons than itself to attempt a complete takeover of that person from which the original demon was controlling.

The next small section is the key to overcoming this hostile return-takeover; to hear God’s word and keep it (Luke 11:28). In this small statement is the whole of the Bible teachings.  In the whole of this small statement is the revelation of God’s plan for the salvation of humanity through His Son Jesus, who was sent to save the world from sin (John 3:17); for all who are born of God (John 1:12-13) because God loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son into this evil world to take upon Himself the sins of humanity and pay the price for them, which is death, so that we may receive eternal life set free from sin and the evil grasp of Satan and His demons (John 3:16-21).

This is all taught by Jesus in leading up to the realization in His teaching that humanity is evil (Luke 11:29). Jesus teaches that there is no need to give any further signs from heaven because plenty of signs have already been given but the evil in man will not allow man to see the signs; that is why Jesus came into this world, to be the remedy for the evil situation that the world has found itself in.

Jesus uses the story of Jonah (which can be found in the Old Testament book of Jonah) as an example of a sign given that man has paid no attention. The point is that the people of Nineveh were a most evil and feared people of their time, and yet at the preaching of Jonah they repented and believed in God. The generation that Jesus is preaching to did not repent and believe that God sent Him to be the Savior of the world (John 3:16-17) and in so, the repented people of Nineveh will testify to the hardened hearts of this generation in their judgment and condemnation (Luke 11:29-32).

The queen of the South came to hear the greatest wisdom that was known in her day, and that was the wisdom of King Solomon (2 Chronicles 9). She was seeking the greatest wisdom that was known and for that she will also be witness to the evilness of the current generation as Jesus (one greater than Solomon) has come and the people did not seek His wisdom.

This is the realization that humanity is evil (Luke 11:29).

This is the promise that Jesus was sent to save humanity (Luke 11:30).

This is the fulfillment of the promise of the coming Messiah (Luke 11:32).

The lesson that Jesus is teaching is that evil is in all of mankind and that He has proven Himself to be more powerful than that evil. He has come to set us free from the evil, unclean demons of Satan. He has spoken; He has given proof; He has offered freedom to humanity who will put their trust in Him and believe that He has overcome Satan and all his demons. He has done this because of our heavenly Fathers great love for us, for each and every one of us.

Dear Lord,

Jesus has been teaching us in Luke 11 how to pray and that we should ask, seek, and knock on the door that You will open to us if we come to You with sincere repentant hearts. We should ask of Your forgiveness, we should seek Your will for our lives each day, and we should knock on the door to life in Jesus Christ, in whom You have sent to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17). We ask LORD that You cleanse our hearts from the evil grasp of Satan and his demons. We make a commitment to You LORD that we will seek Your will for our lives each day and trust in You that You will protect us from the return of the evilness of Satan forevermore. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
