Luke 8:22-25

Jesus suggested to His disciples in Luke 8:22 that they go on a journey. He didn’t tell them why or really where they were going; just that they would go to the other side of the lake. The disciples, without knowing the details, obeyed His command.

When the disciples of Jesus became concerned for the outcome of the journey, Jesus remained calm even though they found themselves in the middle of a storm. Not knowing what to do, the disciples ran to Him for guidance as they became fearful for their lives in the midst of the storm (Luke 8:23-24a). Jesus then commanded the storm to be calm, and all was well. The Bible teaches us in John 1:1-3 (NKJV), “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

In the book of Genesis as God began speaking creation into existence, the Word in which God spoke was Jesus. The very existence of God as He spoke this world into existence is the place in our hearts that continually yearns for fulfillment and completion. This is our connection to our inner desire for love – our fulfillment and salvation that brings us to understanding the connection between faith and reason. God will not force us to come to Him for help because love is not forceful but always giving. But we all have the inner desire that our Creator gave us to continually search for something better and more fulfilling. This fulfillment can only be satisfied through our acceptance of Jesus as our Savior; through acknowledging to Jesus our need for Him in our lives and to ask His forgiveness for our sins and to dedicate our lives to following Him.

The disciples of Jesus were astonished that Jesus could control the wind and the waves – He saved their lives in an instant. He can save your life in an instant too, if you will believe in Him and ask.

This is an example of the promise that Jesus is in control of everything as everything was created through Him (John 1:3).

When you encounter the storms of life, do you run to Jesus for guidance? We live in a sinful world and we are going to find ourselves in storms from time to time. Jesus is there waiting for us to call on Him for guidance and security, just as His disciples did. Notice how even when present with His disciples during the storm, He waited for them to ask for help before He acted on their request. It’s the same for us today; Jesus is with us in Spirit, but He is also waiting for us to call out to Him for help. It is His loving desire to comfort us and give us guidance, but He is patient and just, and He will not force His will upon us – we must ask. Jesus will prompt our hearts to seek Him, but we must respond to that prompting by acknowledging Him and receiving His love in our lives by obeying His Word and seeking His will for our lives each day. And if we do, He will guide us through the storms of life.

Dear Lord,

Sometimes we wonder why You would allow us to experience the storms of life. We would like You to just keep us from ever having to experience such things. But we live in a sinful world, and the storms of life are part of the fallen sinful nature that is within us all. You have promised to guide us through the storms of life, as well as the good times, if we will call on the name of Jesus. Please help us to put our faith in Jesus during the good times and the bad times, that He will guide us through the storm and into eternal life. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
