1 Timothy 6:13–16

In 1 Timothy 6:13–16 the Apostle Paul declares two things: (1) That Timothy/man of God (1 Timothy 6:11, NKJV) “keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing” (1 Timothy 6:14). The commandment that Paul is speaking of is declared in 1 Timothy 6:11–12, “11But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

The second declaration that Paul is making is found in the second half of 1 Timothy 6:14–16 concerning the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This will be decided upon by God in His own timing (1 Timothy 6:14b–15a). Paul then gives proper praise and respect to Jesus who is the King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15). Paul then ends his praise of Jesus by declaring, “16who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen” (1 Timothy 6:16).

This is a command “11But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:11–12).

This is a promise of the return of our Lord Jesus Christ in Almighty honor and everlasting power (1 Timothy 6:14b–16).

Jesus declared to His disciples in John 14:1–4, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

We may question as to knowing where Jesus was going and as to know the way as did Thomas, who the Lord made sure to ask the right question at the right time so we all would know with all certainty. In John 14:5 Thomas asked Jesus, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus then said to Thomas and all His disciples, as He says to all of us when He calls us to Him and speaks to our hearts, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Until Jesus returns, we fight the good fight in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior; we flee the evils of this world and pursue the righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness of Christ Jesus as He fills our hearts, minds, and souls.

Dear LORD,

We stand on the promises of the Bible in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We know Him as the way, the truth, and the life that leads to everlasting life in heaven with You. Give us renewed strength each day as we strive to keep the commandment as the Apostle Paul instructs in 1 Timothy 6:11–16. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
