1 Timothy 5:17–20

In Acts 6:1–7 the early Church decided upon some to help with the needs of the daily activities of the Church. The twelve apostles instructed the Church, “Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;” (Acts 6:3, NKJV).

The elders in the Church are to be respected men, full of God’s Holy Spirit. They should be received as such and respected in the Church. If one is to be accused of wrongdoing, it should be at the witness of several people. The Apostle Paul declares in 1 Timothy 5:17–20, “17Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” [Deuteronomy 25:4] and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages” [Luke 10:7]. 19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. 20Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.”

This is an example of the position of the elders in the Church.

The Apostle Paul states in 1 Timothy 5:19–20, “19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. 20Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.” This is not to publicly humiliate someone in the midst of the congregation, but to respectfully give correction so that everyone may realize and understand the wrongdoing as to learn from the mistake. This is a process for everyone in the church to learn and grow from.

Dear LORD,

You have given us a high level of respect for the elders of the church. Please help us to recognize them for the positions You have appointed them to in leadership. Please help us also to learn from the mistakes we make and that we all may grow in wisdom through correction. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
