1 Timothy 1:5-7

When God gave the Law to Moses, He explained in Leviticus 19:17-18 (NKJV), “You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.” The Apostle Paul teaches this in Galatians 5:14 declaring, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’ (Leviticus 19:18).

A pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith, as the Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Timothy 1:5 requires our attention in the matter of loving your neighbor as yourself. Purity is untarnished with no ulterior motives and derives from sincere faith that requires purity to be sincere. These two together produce a good conscience that in turn reflects love from within the heart of the person.

This is a promise from the commandment of love that in its own example produces a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith.

The Apostle Paul is teaching the young Timothy how to be a good leader in the Church, but these things; a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith are things that we all should be seeking as we learn and grow in our walk of life with Jesus. These are things that separate a Christian from the secular world. These are the characteristics of Jesus that we all should be striving to emulate in our lives each day – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

There are some teachers in the Church that do not know or understand what it means to have a pure heart, sincere faith, and a good conscience as the Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Timothy 1:6-7. Please help them – call them to understanding of Your Word. And LORD, please help us all to put on a pure heart in Christ Jesus as we come to you with sincere faith and a good conscience. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
