Revelation 5:4-5

In Revelation 5:1-3 no one was found worthy to open the scroll held in the right hand of “Him who sat on the throne” (Revelation 5:1, NKJV). In Revelation 5:4 John began to weep as he contemplated these things, but we learn in Revelation 5:5, “5But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.” The “Lion of the tribe of Judah” is in reference to Genesis 49:8-10 in Jacob’s blessing given to his son/which would become the tribe of Judah and direct line of descendants to King David, and ultimately to Jesus. The “Root of David” is in reference to King David and the direct line of descendants to Jesus, adding solidity to the statement made by the elder in Revelation 5:5 that is in reference to Jesus.

This is a promise that Jesus is the only One who is worthy to open the scroll that is held in the right hand of “Him who sat on the throne” (Revelation 5:1).

Jesus is the Lion of Judah; Jesus is the Root of David; Jesus is the only one who is worthy to open the scroll that is held in the right hand of the One who sits on the throne of heaven. He will pronounce judgement on the earth in His righteousness. What we think or believe about ourselves matters not when we stand in front of Jesus; it is only what He thinks and believes about us in His righteous judgement. We must rid ourselves of our self-righteousness and believe and follow His ways for our lives that we would be found righteous in His eyes, not our own. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).

Dear LORD,

Jesus is worthy; Jesus is the only One worthy. Please help us to believe in Him and rid ourselves of self-righteousness and put on the clothing of Jesus in His righteousness by professing Him our Savior and Lord, and by believing in our hearts that You have raised Him from the dead in victory over sin, death, and Satan (Romans 10:9-10). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
