Mark 2:23-28

Jesus has brought forth the need to transition from the ways of the Old Covenant of the Law to the New Covenant which He is beginning to teach.  In Mark 2:23-28 we are given an example of this “new way” being taught by Jesus.  The Pharisees questioned Jesus, and rightly so as they are still under the commandments of the Law, of why His disciples do not obey what is lawful on the Sabbath as they plucked the heads of grain as they walked through the fields.  The issue here is that this constitutes work, which was not allowed on the Sabbath.  Jesus replies with the example of David eating the showbread which was to be eaten only by the priests (1 Samuel 21:1-6).  Then Jesus makes a profound statement of His being the Messiah as He declares in Mark 2:27-28 (NKJV), “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.  Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

This is an example of the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.

This is a promise that Jesus is Lord, even of the Sabbath.

There is controversy among the traditional doctrines of the Church, and one of those is the Sabbath being on Saturday (the last day of the week in which God rested in Genesis 2:3) and of the Sabbath being on Sunday (the day in which Jesus was raised from the dead (Matthew 28:1-8).  This too is part of the transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant as Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant and opened the door to salvation in the New Covenant as the vail of the temple was torn from top to bottom representing the opening of the door to God that had been closed (Matthew 27:50-53).  The main thing that we need to gain here is that Jesus is Lord and we need to let go of our past and follow Him.

Dear LORD,

We as an earthly people stricken by the sinful nature are slow to accept change, but please help us see through this example of Jesus being Lord even of the Sabbath that we need to have change in our lives that is only made possible by Your Holy Spirit working in our lives.  Please help us to open our hearts to Jesus our Lord and allow Your Holy Spirit to work in our lives so that we too may have our relationship with You redeemed – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
