Matthew 6:24

Jesus transitions from teaching about having a “good” eye or a “bad” eye and of how that controls the inner being of the person and the “light” that shines out from the person to the reason why He taught such a lesson.  In Matthew 6:24 Jesus teaches, “No one can serve two masters”, and then explains that one’s dedication will be to only one of things that competes for the loyalty of the person.  As one may feel that a balance is equal in this area, Jesus teaches that even in this balance only one will truly have our dedication as first and most important.  Jesus then ends this passage with the example being of the love for money against our love for God.

This is a command to put God first in our lives.

This is a promise that we cannot serve two masters.

The Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Timothy 6:6-10 (NKJV), “Now godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.  And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.  But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  To have a respectable financial backing is a good thing for us all to have, but we cannot let it override our love for our Creator God who allows us to have our needs met.  We all dream of being financially secure one day, and there is nothing wrong with having wealth.  But we must not let our financial freedom become the focus of our faith.  We must not believe that because we have or may have financial freedom one day that, will be all that we need.  We can have the ability to purchase all the things of this world, but we cannot buy our salvation in Christ Jesus.  Opening our hearts to Jesus and sincerely professing Him our Savior is the most important thing we can do in our physical lives.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that it is You who allows us to have the things in this world that You have blessed us with.  The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil as the Apostle Paul has stated in 1 Timothy 6:10.  Please help us to see that being wealthy or poor, our first interest should be to put our faith in You through our salvation in Christ Jesus to help us manage our lives in finance or whatever it is that You have blessed us with.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
