Romans 5:6

Jesus told the Pharisees in Matthew 9:12-13 (NKJV), “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice’ [Hosea 6:6].  For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”  The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 5:6a, “For when we were still without strength,” and signifies that we, in and of ourselves, have not obtained strength in the eyes of God.  We were still in need at the time in which He sent His Son Jesus into this world, and at the appointed time – in God’s timing – “Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6b).  This is reflective of what Paul has been building on in Romans 5:1-5 and is rooted in our faith in Christ Jesus.

This is a promise and example that in our weakness is found strength in Christ Jesus.

We learn something of our weakness and the strength of God in Hebrews 11:30-34 (HCSB) proclaiming, “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after being encircled by the Israelites for seven days.  By faith Rahab the prostitute received the spies in peace and didn’t perish with those who disobeyed.

“And what more can I say?  Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the raging of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, gained strength after being weak, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight.”  In this world – in this life – in this physical body we are weak, but in Christ – in His Holy Spirit living within us – in the spiritual body… we are strong!

Dear LORD,

Without You we are weak.  Without You living within us through Your Holy Spirit we have no guidance.  Without Jesus we have no salvation.  Thank You for sending Your one and only Son Jesus into this sinful world to save us from our weaknesses in sin and give us new life in Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world (John 3:16-17).  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
