1 Peter 5:1-4

Peter begins his closing of this letter by exhorting the elders of the Beloved and makes the announcement that he too is an elder of the Church and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and as he states in verse 1, “a partaker of the glory that will be revealed.”  He then gives instructions for the elders to lead by willfully serving.  He instructs to lead eagerly in being examples of proper Christian conduct, but not for dishonest gain.  In doing so they will receive the “crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Peter 5:4).

This is a command to be an example for Christ Jesus to all those around us.

To those of you who may be elders of your church; the Apostle Peter tells us that you are to be the example in serving willfully as an overseer.  You should be fair to all in the church and display a conduct becoming of the Lord as you are to reflect Him in your service.

We all also should strive to be elders to those who are younger in Christ than we are; that we would extend a helpful hand in displaying proper conduct and set an example that is reflective of our Savior Jesus.  But we must also keep in mind that in this role, arrogance and pride linger to catch us off guard and sweep in to attack us.  Serving for Christ is putting others before ourselves.  Do this and you will receive the “crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Peter 5:4).

Dear LORD,

I pray today for the elders of the Church in that as You call us to serve for Christ Jesus, You would put within each one the heart of Christ in putting the needs of others before our own.  Give us hearts to serve You willfully and to conduct ourselves always as a reflection of our Savior Jesus as the elders are the example of Christ in the Church –in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
