Luke 12:49-53

Jesus is teaching of His desire to bring judgment (fire) on the earth when He will return and cleanse the earth of the evil of sin. He speaks of His baptism on the cross when He will go under the grave and then be raised to eternal life in the defeat of sin and Satan. Jesus gives His disciples insight to the division that will come within close families because of Him. Those who believe and accept Him will be divided against those who choose not to believe in Him and accept Him as the Savior of the world (John 3:16–17).

This is a promise of the coming judgment on the world.

This is a promise of the baptism that Jesus took upon Himself on the cross for the world.

This is a promise of the division that will come between those who accept Jesus and those who refuse Him.

We must keep in mind that Jesus made these comments to His disciples before He was crucified for the sins of the world. He made a way of escape from sin for all who will believe in Him – that He died for each and every man, woman, and child in all of this world. He died to take away the punishment due to each of us for living in sin. The Apostle Paul states in Romans 3:23 that we all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. Paul goes on to say in Romans 6:23 that as the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The division that Jesus speaks of in the family is not brought about by His love, but by the sinful nature of this world which is of Satan. Jesus made a way of escape from sin through His sacrifice on the cross and ultimately, His resurrection from the dead.

Satan will strive each and every day to block us or pull us away from having a relationship with God through our Savior Jesus. This is the division that Jesus speaks of in Luke 12:51–53. There is a constant battle between the light and the darkness (John 1:1-13). Jesus is the light and He has come to set us free from the darkness if we will put our trust in Him and believe.

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that it is because of the choice to disobey Your commands that has allowed sin into the world and caused division. Please help us to see that Jesus came to set us free from sin in a sinful world and that is where the division occurred. Jesus disrupted the sinful nature which originally disrupted the purity of the garden in the perfect world that You had created for man. Jesus came to make things right again between You and every man, woman, and child; please help us to see that it is only through Jesus that we can experience Your great love for us by believing in Him and accepting the gift of salvation and eternal life. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
