Luke 12:57-59

Jesus is teaching that it is good to be in good moral standing with our neighbors. He taught in John 13:34-35 to love one another as He has first loved us that we should do likewise.  He said that this is how one will be noted as His disciple. Jesus states in Matthew 5:23-25 that one should reconcile differences with another before bringing gifts to God. If these directions are not followed, the result could be that one could find himself in court, and if found guilty they could be thrown into prison until the full price has been paid.

This teaching could also be understood to be in making sure that one is always ready for Christ’s return by submitting to God’s will for your life. Those who have not received salvation in Jesus will be cast out of the kingdom of heaven (Luke 13:27-28).

This is a command to keep in good moral standing with everyone.

This is a command to love one another as Jesus first loved us (John 13:34-35).

Jesus has said that as He was persecuted, so will be those who follow Him (John 15:20).  But He also taught us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). We live in a fallen world where sin is present all around us every day. We must strive to follow Jesus, or sin will overtake us and we will be the one found guilty when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ. We need to settle our debt with Christ by asking His forgiveness of our sins and then strive to follow Him all the days of our lives so that we can hear the words of welcoming into His kingdom of heaven; “well done my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

Dear Lord,

Please put within us the heart of Your good and faithful servant and fill us with the good moral values that Your Son Jesus has taught us in Your Word. Please help us to love our neighbor as Jesus has first loved us, so that Your love will flow through us and the light of Jesus will shine through our lives to all those around us. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
