Titus 3:8
In Titus 3:8 (NKJV) the Apostle Paul begins by stating, “8This is a faithful saying,” and he is referring to his previous statement/command in Titus 3:1-7. Paul instructs that those who believe in God should always place a focus on doing good works for Christ Jesus; not that the good works earn salvation, but that the good works done by the believer reflect Christ Jesus living within the heart, mind, and soul of the believer. Paul ends Titus 3:8 by declaring, “These things are good and profitable to men.” God will bless those who seek His will for their lives – in Christ.
This is a command to be an active Christian in Christ Jesus.
To conduct oneself in the ways that the Apostle Paul has instructed Titus to teach the believers in the church at Crete (Titus 1:5) is good sound advice for all Christians everywhere. To always keep in mind the things Paul has instructed in Titus 3:1-7 is to be a Christian in as much as we can say that we actually “do” as active Christians, keeping in mind that we are not “doing” these things to earn our salvation but as a reflection of our salvation in Christ Jesus and the saving grace of God and His mercy on our lives. To break it down even more, the things that Paul teaches that we should actually “do” are as he quotes in Titus 3:1-2, “1Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.” The remainder of Paul’s instruction found in Titus 3:3-7 is the daily reminder of “why” we should conduct our lives in such a way as it is reflective of the saving grace of God working in our lives through Christ Jesus and His Holy Spirit living within us.
Dear LORD,
My prayer for us all today is the words of Jesus as He quotes Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 in Matthew 22:37-40, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Please help us to obey the words of Jesus and “be” the people that You desire us to be – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
