Titus 2:6–8

The Apostle Paul was giving instructions for the “older men” and “older women” (Titus 2:2–3, NKJV), and the younger women in Titus 2:4. He is not, however, exempting the younger men from such conduct becoming a Christian but adds in Titus 2:6–8, “6Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.” Paul teaches in Romans 8:17–21, “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. Therefore

‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him;

              If he is thirsty, give him a drink;

              For in so doing you will heap coals of

                           Fire on his head.’

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

This is a command for the younger men to learn and grow in Christ Jesus.

Evil fuels evil, and when we repay one for harm done to us with hurtful words or actions, we are just adding to the evil in the world. God calls us out of the evils of this world and into a new life in Christ Jesus our Savior, the Savior of the world (John 1:29; 3:16–17). Jesus is our example and it is our life’s calling to represent Him properly in this world through our lives – In Christ.

Dear LORD,

The Apostle Paul teaches us in Romans 13:14, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” Please help us to realize and understand that the fleshly ways are reflective of the devil who can only lust after us with self-pride and envy. Please help us to realize and understand that love – true love – comes only from You through salvation in Your One and only Son Christ Jesus. We know that You love us and desire to save us from sin because the Bible teaches us in John 3:16a, “For God so loved the world.” You loved us so much while we were living in sin that Your desire is to save us from it. Thank You LORD! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
