Romans 8:2

Jesus tells His disciples in John 14:15-18 (HCSB), “If you love Me, you will keep My commands.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever.  He is the Spirit of truth.  The world is unable to receive Him because it doesn’t see Him or know Him.  But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.”  And in John 14:26 Jesus teaches His disciples that in receiving Him is also receiving His Holy Spirit to teach and guide them, as He states, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit – the Father will send in My name – will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.”

The law was given to show us sin and the wages of sin which is death (Romans 6:23), but the Holy Spirit gives life through Christ Jesus.  Jesus proclaims in John 5:24 (ESV), “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.  He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

This is a promise that the filling of God’s Holy Spirit is freedom from the law of sin and death.

The law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus is one of sincerity of heart.  God knows our deepest innermost feelings of our hearts, and He knows when we are being sincere to Him.  It is this sincerity that is the requirement of the filling of God’s Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation in Christ Jesus.  We cannot lie to God, for God knows all things; and we cannot fake salvation for the outward appearance of it.  Salvation in Christ Jesus is a life-changing event that stays with us for the rest of our lives, both physical and spiritual – which leads to eternal life – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

It is Your Holy Spirit that fills us in our sincerity to You in our coming to Jesus and opening our hearts to You in salvation in and through Christ Jesus that is in the forgiveness that cleanses our souls – our hearts – our lives from sin.  Please fill us LORD with Your life-giving Holy Spirit and set us free from the sinful nature of this world that we may have peace – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
