Romans 6:5-7

In Romans 6:5 the Apostle Paul teaches us that we have been “united together” (NKJV) in Christ Jesus.  We have been baptized into His death (Romans 6:3-5a), and we are also “in the likeness of His resurrection” (Romans 6:5b).  When Jesus was crucified, our old being of living in the sinful nature was crucified with Him so that we may be set free from sin (Romans 6:6).  Paul then teaches us in Romans 6:7, “For he who has died has been freed from sin.”

This is a promise of being set free from sin through the death of Jesus on the cross.

We can only continue to sin while being in our physical bodies; when we die the physical death our physical bodies cannot any longer continue to sin.  But please do not confuse this with salvation as if one dies the physical death while living in the sinful nature, eternity is sure to be spent in hell; but putting your trust in Jesus and believing that He died for your sins is transforming of your life from living in the sinful nature to living in the righteousness of Jesus.  The transformation that takes place in your life in salvation in and through Christ Jesus is crucifying our old sinful self with Him and rising to a new life through His resurrection that we would no longer be confound to the grasp of Satan in sin, but be alive in Christ Jesus – forgiven and set free to live eternal in heaven – in Christ Jesus.  Paul will go on to teach us in Romans 6:11 (NIV), “In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”  And in Romans 6:14 (ESV), Paul teaches, “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”

Dear LORD,

Please help us to grasp the understanding that we, in putting our faith in Christ Jesus, have died to sin through His death, and that we are granted a new life by the transformation that takes place in our lives by being forgiven of our sins that we would no longer willingly live in sin, but seek the righteousness of Christ Jesus and the freedom from sin that You have provided for us in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
