Romans 6:20-23

The apostle Paul teaches us in this passage of Romans 6:20-23 that when we lived in the ways of the sinful nature, we produced through our lives things that are reflective of the sinful nature.  We did not produce things reflective of God because we were not living in obedience to God but in obedience to the sinful nature which leads only to death (Romans 6:20-21).

But when we opened our hearts to forgiveness through Christ Jesus and were set free from the sinful nature through our salvation in Christ Jesus, we became obedient to God – we ended our obedience to the sinful nature and a change in our lives was made through the work that Jesus has done for us and the opening of our hearts to Him in accepting the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  In opening our hearts to the gift that God offers to us through His Son Jesus, we no longer are slaves to sin but slaves to God in seeking to be obedient to Him.  Instead of producing fruit in our lives that is reflective of the sinful nature, we now produce fruit that is reflective of God through the work of His Holy Spirit which now lives within us which leads to everlasting life (Romans 6:22-23).  Paul sums this up in Romans 6:23 as he proclaims (HCSB), “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is a promise that sin leads to death.

This is a promise that Christ Jesus leads to eternal life.

Satan tries to convince us that we will be just fine living as we do in the sinful nature because we are all basically good people – right?  But this is just the trickery of Satan as he tires everything he can to keep us away from God, because he knows that if we learn the truth about sin and open our hearts to the gift that God has provided for us to break the grasp of Satan on our lives, he will have to experience his defeat once again as he loses another soul to the one who has defeated him forevermore.  Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).  Satan knows this…do you?  Play a part in the defeat of Satan today and open your heart to Jesus as, “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23, NKJV).

Dear LORD,

Thank You for the gift that You have offered to all who will believe in You.  Thank You for eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23b).  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
