Romans 5:7-8

In Romans 5:7-8 the Apostle Paul takes a closer look at the death of Christ Jesus and puts it in a more humanistic view for us to better grasp the depth at which our Savior went for us in His death on the cross.  Paul puts in our thoughts the idea of dying for someone and of how one may step forward to die for another who has been determined to be a righteous person, but Jesus died for us all while we were still living sinful lives in which we would view in our own minds as being unworthy of such an action.  By this, God shows us His great love for us in that as we were living in the worst possible way, in sin, God stepped forward in our place to redeem us back to Himself.  We may ask why God, or anyone, would do such a thing for someone who is undeserving and unworthy, but the answer is given by Paul in Romans 5:8 (ESV), “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

This is an example and promise of God’s great love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

It is because of God’s great love for us that He would do such a thing – because His love for us is greater than anything we could ever imagine.  In our finite minds we have to find a way to determine if one would be worthy of dying for, and we try to make judgments for ourselves.  But God does not work that way.  God invented compassion, caring, mercy, grace, and love – in which the Bible tells us, “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16).  We search our hearts to find a reason to die for another and if that would be a worthy cause – if the one in which we are dying for is worth it; God had one reason to die for us all – because He loves us all so much!

Dear LORD,

It is hard for us to fathom Your great love for us as You determined without a doubt that You would die for us all through Your one and only Son Jesus to save us from the penalty for the sin that is in this world and we have all experienced.  Thank You LORD for loving us so much!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
