Romans 2:25-29

Throughout the historical record of the Law given to Moses on Mount Sinai, the Jews have developed from within themselves a pecking order of who is perceived in their own eyes to be the most religious according to who keeps the law best, or better than others.  But they missed the point of the law which is to make them aware of the sin that is present in all their lives.

Circumcision was a sign given to Abraham from God to show his obedience to God in following God’s commands (Genesis 17).  The Jews had become complacent with the fact that being circumcised made them righteous, but it was not the act of being circumcised that makes one righteous in God’s eyes, but having a pure, sincere, repentant heart that through one’s faith strives to follow as God leads them.

This is a promise and example that the motive of our hearts is the purity of our actions – in Christ.

Jesus proclaimed to the woman at the well in John 4:23-24 (ESV), “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”  In one’s humility to God and our Savior Jesus Christ, one should not seek the praise of our fellow humans, but the blessings from God in the spirit that fills our souls with the peace of Christ and the inner love that can only come from a Savior who died for us because of His great love for us!

Dear LORD,

We are all indebted to You for the love that You have shown to us in dying to pay the penalty for our sins in which we are not capable of paying ourselves.  You saved us from eternal hell and opened the door to life for all who will believe in You.  Please help us to be reflective of Christ Jesus and indwell us with a humility that seeks not the praise of man but of Your spiritual blessings – in Christ!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
