Romans 2:2

Paul has moved from speaking of the wrath of God being revealed to the unrighteous and ungodly being those who have clearly seen “His invisible attributes” and His “eternal power and Godhead (Romans 1:20, NKJV) to the fact that “the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things” (Romans 2:2).

To gain a better understanding of the judgment of God according to truth, we must understand that Jesus is the truth of God and has been revealed to us through His life, ministry, death, and resurrection.  We also learn in today’s Bible passage of Romans 2:2, “…that the judgment of God is according to truth…”  In John 14:6 Jesus tells His disciples, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  And in John 5:22-24 (ESV) Jesus tells us, “The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father.  Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

“I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.”  Following Jesus and the truth in which He taught is the way to life in escaping the judgment that is to come to all those who practice such things as was revealed in describing the ungodly and unrighteous (Romans 1:18-32).

This is a promise that the judgment of God is against all who refuse to believe in Christ Jesus.

The purpose of the Old Testament is to show us the need of a means of making oneself right with God and that because of sin, man cannot and does not have the means in and of himself to do such a thing; the purpose of the Old Testament is to show us that all of humanity is lost without hope in sin and will be judged guilty by Almighty God.  Only those who believed in God were considered righteous (right-with-God) in the Old Testament.  Once God had given enough time to reveal this throughout the historical record of the Old Testament, He then gave the means of redemption and reconciliation which came through Himself in the form of the Son of God in Jesus Christ, who came not to condemn the world but to save the world from sin for all who will believe in Him (John 3:16-17).  Throughout His ministry and the teachings of the apostles (which is all based and grounded on His ministry as He personally taught them) is the revelation of salvation in Christ Jesus.  The entire Bible points us to Jesus as He provided the acceptable sacrifice for all of humanity unto righteousness which is only found through the truth of God which is Jesus, and striving to follow Him even though we know that we will make mistakes along the way.  But to those who have a sincere heart to following Him, He forgives and heals the mistakes that are prone to the physical life here on earth, that if we persist in believing in Him through all the trials and temptations of this world, He will grant eternal spiritual life – in Christ Jesus – in heaven.  But for all who refuse to believe in Jesus will be the judgment of God as Paul teaches us in Romans 2:2.

Dear LORD,

You are teaching us through the Apostle Paul of how obvious You have made Yourself to us in this earthly world and the mysterious yet magnificent creation in which You have put us.  You have given us the most historically proven document in the world as proof in written form of Your majesty and account of Your plan of salvation for all of humanity, yet we still refuse to believe in Jesus as our Savior and Savior of the world for all who will believe in Him.  Please help us to believe LORD that You love us so much that You came to us in the form of Your Son Jesus to die for us and pay our eternal penalty so that we may be forgiven through Christ Jesus and live with You in heaven for all eternity and escape the judgment that is to be for all who are ungodly and unrighteous.  Dear LORD, for all who do believe in Jesus and strive sincerely to follow in His footsteps…Thank You!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
