Romans 14:5-6

The Apostle Paul continues to give examples of quarreling from within the Church at Rome.  In reflection of the previous verses in Romans 14:1-4 of which foods to eat or not, Paul brings to our attention that this quarreling exists to the degree of not just what foods one deems eatable or not, but when and how one would go about eating or not eating (Romans 14:6b).  He uses an additional example of esteeming one day above another (Romans 14:5-6a) in the early Church at Rome.  This, I believe, is being addressed to worship (the Sabbath day) being on Saturday [which is reflective of the Law of the Old Testament as God rested on the seventh day of creation (Genesis 2:3)] or of worship (the Sabbath day) being on Sunday as is reflective of the New Testament as Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day [which would be Sunday, being the first day of the week after His crucifixion (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1-2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1)].  But Paul teaches that whichever day is believed to be the Sabbath in your heart, that should be the day You worship God as to the Sabbath day; if others prefer to worship on a different day, let that be in their heart the day that they worship God.  The point is that each of us, in our hearts and in our sincerity to God, worship Him.

This is a command to stop the petty quarreling within the Church in which we are the body of Christ Jesus.

This is a command to be encouraging to one another through our differences – in Christ.

God desires us to give Him our attention in worship as our Creator and Sustainer and giver of life for all who will believe in Him.  He desires our worship every day in seeking His guidance and direction in our lives as to His will for us, that we would have a personal relationship with Him.  If we feel that the day of gathering for worship of the Sabbath day is on Saturday or Sunday, that we would worship Him with all our heart, mind, and strength.  If we will do that, God will be pleased with us.

Dear LORD,

There are plenty of problems in this earthly world that we all have to deal with each day.  Please help us to be problem solvers instead of problem causers; that we would take on the mind of Jesus and spread His love in the world today.  It is so tough LORD to truly be the shining light of Christ Jesus as we are bombarded with the problems of the day.  But please help us to see that through it all we are filled with Your Holy Spirit which You have given us in our salvation in Christ Jesus to lead us and guide us as Your light unto the world today – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
