Romans 13:11-14

The Apostle Paul begins this final section of Romans 13 by commanding the Church at Rome to, “do this.”  So we must ask the question, “do what?”  As we look back to the preceding verses of Romans 13:8-10 we see the answer: love.  We are to love one another as the love of Christ Jesus living within us through our salvation in Him is the fulfillment of the Law for us unto righteousness and eternal life.  But Paul wants the Church at Rome (and us today) to understand that to “do” love takes action.  Paul instructs in Romans 13:12-14 (NKJV), “The night is far spent, the day is at hand.  Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.  Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”

This is a command to take action in our salvation in Christ Jesus and live in reflection of Him.

When we put our faith in Christ Jesus to forgive our sins and renew our lives in His righteousness, it is only the beginning; it is not the end.  We are to begin immediately living the new life that He has given us through our salvation in Him.  We are the light of the world today as Jesus taught His disciples that they were in Matthew 5:14-16 (HCSB), “You are the light of the world.  A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.  No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

Dear LORD,

You have saved us out of darkness and into the light of Christ Jesus that we may live set free from sin, forgiven in and through Christ Jesus to a new life that You have for us to shine the light that You have put in our lives by Your mercy and grace which reflects Your great love for us in Christ Jesus.  Please fill us with action to share what You have given us with others that You would be glorified through our lives.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
