Romans 1:16-17

            Romans 1:16-17 gives us a look at what we should expect to learn about in the remainder of what many scholars refer to as the “gospel” of Paul.  We have broken this passage into several smaller studies so that we can hopefully grasp a larger meaning of the whole of this very important passage that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome/the church at Rome.

Paul teaches us that we have no reason to be ashamed of the “gospel of Christ” (Romans 1:16a), “for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16b).  The Apostle Paul also teaches us that the gospel of Christ breaks down the barrier that has separated the Jews and the Gentiles as now, through the gospel of Christ, the Jew and the Greek/Gentile are able to receive salvation through Christ Jesus (Romans 1:16c).  And in Romans 1:17 we have learned that through God’s faithfulness to humanity to provide a way of salvation from sin, we too, through our faith in Him may receive His righteousness as the Prophet Habakkuk proclaimed in Habakkuk 2:4 (NKJV),

“Behold the proud,

His soul is not upright in him;

But the just shall live by his faith.”

This is the theme for the letter that the Apostle Paul wrote (through the inspiration from God through His Holy Spirit) to the church/Christians in Rome.

The Bible gives us a timeless teaching that holds true for us today in answering the call of God on each of our hearts and living in salvation through Jesus Christ who makes it all possible for us to draw close to God through His faith to us and our faith in Him.  As we dig deeper into this study of the book/letter to the Romans, I pray that God will lead us all to a deeper understanding of His word and draw us closer to Him through this “gospel” teaching.

Dear LORD,

Many scholars’ lives have been deeply touched through this letter to the Roman church, and many lives have come to a saving understanding of Your grace and faith to us in salvation through our faith in Christ Jesus.  I pray that You will continue to bring people to You – in Christ – through this Bible study, and that we will all bring glory to You through it.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
