Revelation 9:7-12

The locusts, as described in Revelation 9:1-6, are described in Revelation 9:7-11 by their physical appearance. They are compared to horses being readied for battle (Revelation 9:7), with crowns “like gold” but not of gold. This is a very important statement as the devil tries his best to “appear” like God in his attempt to be greater than God. This description also may lead us to believe that the fallen angel in Revelation 9:1-2 is the fallen angel Lucifer, the devil and Saten himself being given permission by God to wreak havoc on the earth as is his intention to destroy God’s creation. In Revelation 9:11 this fallen angel of the bottomless pit is given the name Abaddon (Hebrew) and Apollyon (Greek) meaning destruction or destroyer. These locusts are further described as having faces like men, possible showing intelligence; hair like women, possibly showing beauty; teeth like a lion, possibly showing their destructive power; breastplates like iron, possibly showing their strength and perseverance; the sound of their wings were like the sound of many horses and chariots running into battle; tails like scorpions with the ability to sting and hurt men for five months; all following the kingship of the angel of the bottomless pit (Revelation 9:7-11).

With this horrid description of the locusts and their mission to harm but not to kill man, we are then given the warning by John in Revelation 9:12 declaring, “12One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.”

This is the description of the locusts and their mission as they come from the smoke released from the opening of the bottomless pit as led by its king and angel named Apollyon/Destroyer.

As we read through the sounding of the trumpets in the opening of the seventh seal of the scroll taken from the right hand of Him who sits on the throne of heaven by the Lamb, the punishments are growing more and more severe for all who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads (Revelation 9:4). This is vital in understanding the prophecies of the Revelation of Jesus Christ as it is a call to repentance and salvation from these horrible torments to come. The ministry of Jesus in the New Testament is a call to repentance as He declares in Matthew 4:17 (NKJV), “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Dear LORD,

Jesus has declared in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Please let us understand this unto salvation from Your wrath to come. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
