Revelation 9:1-2
As the fifth angel sounds the trumpet given to him, the Apostle John declares, “And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. 2And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit” (Revelation 9:1-2, NKJV). The wording of the Apostle John is very similar to the wording of Jesus in Luke 10:18 as He states, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” We cannot be sure that this angel is the fallen angel Lucifer or one of his fallen angels, but the text does inform us that this angel was “given the key to the bottomless pit” (Revelation 9:1). It could be that God, in His omnipotence, has allowed Satan to act in his own evil ways in retribution on the inhabitants of the earth in giving those who remain disobedient to God their just punishment. All through the life and ministry of Jesus we learn of how He will protect us from the evils of this world if we will profess Him our Lord and Savior, just as is promised for those who have the seal of God as His wrath is released on the inhabitants of the earth in the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
This is the sounding of the fifth trumpet after the Lamb has removed the seventh seal from the scroll taken from the right hand of Him who sits on the throne of heaven.
Isaiah 14:12 declares,
“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!”
And in Ezekiel 28:11-19 the Bible teaches us that the “anointed cherub” was “perfectly created,” but became full of violence and sinned. So God destroyed him and cast him to the ground as his wisdom became corrupted for the sake of his own splendor. Is it possible, and I do think, that God’s wrath being released on the inhabitants of the earth could be the loosening of the hold on the devil to show his true face in his anger at God for casting him out of heaven for being disobedient to Him, just as is the punishment for the disobedient of humanity.
Dear LORD,
You are teaching us about a day when Your patience will shorten in waiting for the lost souls of humanity to come to You in obedience seeking forgiveness. You sent Your One and only Son Jesus to save us from Your wrath. Please touch our hearts today that we would wake up and see the importance of humbling ourselves to You and ask for Your forgiveness of our sins, that You would cleanse our hearts and make us pure – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
