Revelation 4:4-5

In Revelation 4:4-5 we learn about the twenty-four thrones that were around the throne of God in which sat twenty-four elders, all with crowns of gold. We learned in Revelation 4:3 that there is a rainbow around the throne of God, and in Revelation 4:5 the Bible teaches us that there were lightnings, thunderings, and voices proceeding from the throne. We also learn in Revelation 4:5b (NKJV), “Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”

There is much speculation about who the twenty-four elders are that surround the throne of God, but it is safe to say that they represent a constant praise and worship of God Almighty as He rules from His throne. The lightnings, thunderings, and voices proceeding from the throne of God represent His Almighty power and is represented in Exodus 20:18 as God brought His presence to the Israelites in the giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses. The seven lamps of fire in relation to the seven Spirits of God (Revelation 4:5) have been identified as best we can to the number 7 being that of completeness and representative of the completeness of God as was revealed in Revelation 1:4.

This is an example of the praise that God should receive from us every minute of every day.

This is an example of the Almighty power of God.

This is an example of the completeness of God.

As we learn about the throne of God and His power, completeness, and the praise we should give Him, we are also learning about God in heaven, which is a different view of that which we learn in the Gospel accounts of the earthly life and ministry of Jesus. On earth Jesus was represented as a humble servant to show us the way to life eternal; in heaven Jesus is revealed as His rightful Almighty place in power, completeness, and worthy of our worship. On earth, this is a struggle against the sinful nature that fights against us all, but in heaven this is a wonderful splendor of praise and worship to our Creator, Almighty God, “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,…who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8).

Dear LORD,

We humble ourselves to Your Almighty Power and completeness. We praise You for all that You are, God Almighty. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
