Revelation 3:1-6

The Bible teaches us in Matthew 24:36-44 that no one knows the day or the hour when Jesus will return. The message that Jesus, “He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars” (Revelation 3:1, NKJV) sends to the church in Sardis is that they are revered as being a church that is alive, but Jesus declares that they are dead. Jesus addressed this issue in Matthew 24:45-51 in teaching to not be hypocritical as He declares in Matthew 24:50-51, “the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” But even amongst this church there are some who are worthy; Jesus says, “and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy” (Revelation 3:4). Those who overcome will not only be clothed in white garments, but their names will not be blotted out of the Book of Life, and Jesus will confess those names before His Father and before His angels (Revelation 3:5). Jesus ends this letter as those before by stating, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Revelation 3:6).

This is a promise that the hypocrites will be found out, but the faithful will have their names written in the Book of Life as Jesus proclaims their names to the angels of God.

There is a very simple way to understand who is the hypocritical servant – it is the one who believes they are the best and most faithful Christian in your church – the one who believes that they are a better Christian than everybody else. Jesus teaches humility; this is putting everyone else before you and keeping an attitude of servanthood. This person most likely does not know that they are the one who will receive the rewards as the overcomer because they are not concerned about who is the “best” as they are focused on the needs of others and working to do what they can to help them. Jesus declares in Matthew 20:26, “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.”

Dear LORD,

It is against our nature to be a servant to others as we all desire to be first. But it is this attitude of giving up self to serve You as our Lord and Savior. Please fill our hearts and minds with an attitude of humility in seeking to do Your will for our lives over and above our own earthly desires, that we would be included in those who will be clothed in white garments and have our names in the Book of Life as You proclaim those names to Your Father in heaven and to His angels. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
