Revelation 21:15-17

In Revelation 21:15-17 the angel that began speaking to the Apostle John in Revelation 21:9 measured the city of the New Jerusalem with a gold reed. The Bible teaches us in Revelation 21:16-17 (NKJV), “16The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel.”

In Revelation 21:17 is what may seem an odd statement as the verse states, “17Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel.” The clarification here is that an angel is doing the measuring; the confusion may arise as a cubit is to be about the length of a mans forearm and we may question whether or not an angel doing the measuring would be the same length. It is to my understanding that Revelation 21:17 is to clarify that a cubit is a cubit regardless of who is making the measurement, be it a man or an angel.

This is the measurement of the city of the New Jerusalem.

There are numerous interpretations of the measurements of the city of the New Jerusalem and its actual size. Some say that each wall is one thousand five hundred miles long, one thousand five hundred miles high, and even one thousand five hundred miles thick. Others say that this is simply too large of a scale to imagine a city.

I believe that there are two important things that we need to notice about the size of the New Jerusalem: (1) It is going to be large enough to house all the Christians who ever lived; past, present, and future. (2) The New Jerusalem is measured in numbers that relate to the number twelve, which is in relation to the number of the tribes of Israel and the number of the apostles of Jesus. God’s plan, as is His ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) are higher and greater than man’s ways; He knows what He is doing more than we could ever imagine. Put your trust and faith in Him, and you will be well.

Dear LORD,

Sometimes we get caught up in the dissection of the information You give us in the Bible and miss the point You are trying to make to us. Please help us to catch ourselves when we do this and show us the main point. . . that You are Almighty God who sent Your One and only Son Jesus to save us from Your wrath to come, and that You love us more than we could ever imagine; so much that in Your omnipotence You want to have a relationship with each one of us as Your greatest creation. Thank You LORD for caring for each one of us. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
