Revelation 19:17-18
In Revelation 19:17-18 the Apostle John sees another angel “standing in the sun” (NKJV) which could represent the glory of God shining behind him. Psalm 84:11 declares, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield;” and the Lord speaks through the Prophet Malachi in Malachi 4:1-3,
1 “‘For behold, the day is coming,
Burning like an oven,
And all the proud, yes, all who do
wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall
burn them up,’
Says the LORD of hosts,
‘That will leave them neither root nor
branch.
2 But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;
And you shall go out
And grow fat like stall-fed calves.
3 You shall trample the wicked,
For they shall be ashes under the souls
of your feet
On the day that I do this,’
Says the LORD of hosts.”
It is important that we take note of the spelling of the word “Sun” where we would expect to see the spelling of “Son” in Malachi 4:2 as stating, “The Sun of Righteousness” as it connects this passage to that of Revelation 19:17 of the “angel standing in the sun.”
We also see in Revelation 19:17 that this gathering of the birds of the air (or as we would most likely relate to vultures and those who scavenge for a dead corpse) that this is a gathering to the supper of God, not the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).
In Revelation 19:18 we learn that the birds are called together so, “18that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.” This verse is inclusive of all those who refuse to open their hearts to the LORD and the gift of salvation He offers through His One and only Son Jesus. There shall be no distinction between, “free and slave, both small and great” (Revelation 19:18), but that the supper of God’s main course for the birds will consist of all who refuse to put their faith and trust in the LORD God of heaven.
This is a promise of the great supper of God in which the main course/destruction will be all those who refuse to put their trust and faith in Him.
The supper of God as described in Revelation 19:17-18 is another layer of God’s great plan of salvation for those who put their faith in Him, and the destruction of those who refuse His will for their lives and continue living freely in the sinful nature of this world. We must remind ourselves periodically as we study the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ that in heaven, which consists of eternity, there is no time or sequence of events but that possibly the best way in which we can describe them is a layering of things that as we read about individually are taking place all at the same time. All this coming destruction of the sinful nature/woman on the beast/Satan will take place in an instant as we know it; 2 Thessalonians 2:8 declares, “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” This will all take place in one breath from the Lord’s mouth, woosh! And it will be finished.
Dear LORD,
You sent Your One and only Son Jesus to this world to preach to us and teach us about this coming day so that we may prepare ourselves unto righteousness in Christ Jesus and be saved from Your great wrath. You teach us about the day of Your supper in which You will destroy all who remain with hardened hearts to You and the salvation You offer us in Christ Jesus. Please help us to realize and understand that we would open our hearts to Jesus and be saved and enter into Your glory – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
