Revelation 18:9-10

In Revelation 18:9 the voice from heaven that called humanity to come out of the sinful nature of the world, and then announced that the woman who is representative of the sinful nature will be burned in her double-cup of punishment for leading others away from the LORD (Revelation 18:4-8), announces in Revelation 18:9-10 (NKJV), “The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her when they see the smoke of her burning, 10standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’” Those who have profited from the ways of this world will be saddened when they see their great city Babylon/the woman representing the sinful nature of this world fall because they will not so much mourn for her but because they will realize that their luxurious lifestyle has come to an end. Revelation 18:10 notes that they will stand at a distance in fear of the woman/sinful nature lashing out at them on her way down while being astonished at the speed in which her fall will take place.

This is an example that as the sinful nature is being destroyed, those who are participating in it will distance themselves as if they were not involved with it while remaining unrepentant in their own hearts.

Have you ever noticed, maybe when you were a child, that when the group is involved in something that you knew was wrong, everyone was enjoying themselves until you were caught? If only one person from the group was caught, everyone else scattered to a distant hiding place to watch and see the punishment of the one who got caught. This is the scene in Revelation 18:9-10. Jesus declares in Luke 16:15, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” And the Psalmist declares in Psalm 44:21, “Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.” Turn from sin and ask God to purify your heart and lead you in sincerity and obedience to Him; if you do, He will save you from the wrath that will befall all who remain with hardened hearts living in the sinful nature of this world. Put your faith in Jesus today and begin a new life – In Christ!

Dear LORD,

We all have walked in the ways of this world. We all have fallen to the sinful nature. But You sent Your One and only Son Jesus to save us from Your wrath that will fall on all who refuse to repent and open their hearts to receive Your saving Grace through Christ Jesus. Please lead us away from sin and into a new life of forgiveness – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
