Revelation 18:20

In Revelation 18 we have been learning of the destruction of the sinful nature of this world as the Bible has personified in the woman on the beast, and materialized in the great city Babylon. In all this loss remains hope for all who put their faith in the Lord as we learn in Revelation 18:20, 20 “‘Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!’” We may be amazed at the “voice from heaven” (Revelation 18:4, NKJV) giving the command to rejoice over all the destruction and weeping that has taken place in Revelation 18 over the destruction of the sinful nature/woman on the beast/Babylon, but we must keep in mind the description of the sinful nature as described in Revelation 17:3-6 that pictures for us the depth of this evil as the Apostle John explains, “3So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. 5And on her forehead a name was written:

MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,

THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS

AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS

OF THE EARTH.

6I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.”

This is a command to rejoice with the apostles, prophets, and martyrs over the destruction of the sinful nature of this world.

God has declared destruction for the sinful nature personified as a woman – a harlot adorned in all the things of this earth that may be or look beautiful and bring excitement for a moment but will in the end be utterly destroyed (Revelation 18:12-14). Should we rejoice with the holy apostles and prophets, and with those martyrs that have been calling out to God to avenge their souls (Revelation 6:9-10)? When this day comes I believe it will be a day of rejoicing in heaven that will complement that of when a soul is saved. The Bible teaches us in Luke 15:10 as Jesus declares, “Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” This will be a day of rejoicing over the end of sin, oh how great it will be for all who are in Christ Jesus.

Dear LORD,

A great rejoicing in heaven. . . a rejoicing that we all hope to partake. . . Please let it be so LORD in all our lives – in Christ! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
