Revelation 16:10-11

Revelation 16:10 (NKJV) declares, “10Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain.” Many scholars attach the likeness of this bowl of God’s wrath to the ninth plague of darkness that Egypt was hit with before the exodus in Pharoah’s refusal to let God’s people go so that they could worship Him (Exodus 10:21-29). I believe that there is another passage that is directly related to the events of Revelation 16:10 and it is found in Matthew 25 in the parable of the talents. Jesus declares in Matthew 25:30, “And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” It is also important that we notice as in Revelation 16:9 the same result/reaction of the people affected in Revelation 16:11is that they blasphemed the God of heaven; they did not repent and ask God to forgive them and make a decision to turn from their wicked ways, but they blamed God for their pain and were rebellious in their actions.

This is the pouring out of the fifth bowl of God’s wrath on the earth.

You may notice that this is the pouring out of the fifth bowl of God’s wrath “on the earth” and yet it is being poured out on the “throne of the beast” (Revelation 16:10). This is because the earth is the dwelling place of the devil – Satan and all the disobedient angels that followed him when he was cast out of heaven (Ezekiel 28:17; Luke 10:18). We live in the world of the devil on this earth. But it is because in his challenge to God to be higher/greater than the Almighty God of heaven, God has allowed the battle for our souls to take place on the home turf of the enemy as to have no excuses when his defeat is totally complete. Put your trust in Jesus today and you too will be a part of the defeat of the devil and all of heaven will rejoice at your salvation. The Bible teaches us in Luke 15:7 as Jesus declares, “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”

Dear LORD,

Your wrath being poured out on the earth is the destruction of the devil and those who follow him. Please help us to see that You are waiting for us to open our hearts to You and come to You for forgiveness and the putting on of the righteousness of Jesus that saves the world from sin (John 1:29). Lead us to salvation and save us from Your wrath that will come to all who refuse You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
