Revelation 1:12-20

In Revelation 1:12-16 is the description of Jesus as John turned around to see who the voice belonged to that was coming from behind him (Revelation 1:10). This is the description that he gave (Revelation 1:12-16, NKJV), “12Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band. 14His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes like a flame of fire; 15His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters; 16He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.”

Jesus then describes Himself to John as being “The First and the Last” in addition to describing Himself previously as “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 1:8). He describes His life, death, and resurrection, along with His victory cry for now being the One who determines who will receive life or death as He declares, “18I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive foreveremore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death” (Revelation 1:18) but begins this by letting John know that he does not need to be afraid of Him (Revelation 1:17).

In Revelation 1:20 Jesus explains the seven stars that He held in His right hand as being the seven angels of the seven churches that He instructed John to write to in Revelation 1:11. The seven lampstands in which Jesus was described as  “in the midst of” (Revelation 1:13) are the seven churches.

This is the declaration of the promise of Jesus being, “the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

There is much more to be studied in this Bible passage that needs to be addressed. The connection between the appearance of Jesus with His “golden band,” “sharp two-edged sword,” and His feet as “fine brass, as if refined in a furnace” that stand firm are as the armor of God as we are to use through our salvation in Him as described in Ephesians 6:14-18 as He stands with us in battle “like the sun shining in its strength” (Revelation 1:13-16).

Dear LORD,

Jesus has described Himself to John in all His might, power, and splendor. Please help us to see Jesus as He is; our powerful Savior who holds the keys to life and death through His resurrection and eternal life. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
