Revelation 1:10-11

The Apostle John is described as “in the Spirit” and must have been very similar, if not the very same as the Apostle Peter in Acts 10:9-16. This was a state induced by the Holy Spirit of God working in one’s life in a spiritual state of mind, if not completely of mind, body, and soul. In this spiritual state, John heard a voice that was very loud coming from behind him described as a trumpet. This voice was the voice of Jesus coming from a volume that would overpower anything; a voice that was overwhelming. Jesus gave His instructions for John to write down what he would see and sent it to seven different churches: “to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea” (Revelation 1:11, NKJV).

This is the command from Jesus to John to write down and send what he was about to see to the seven churches in Asia.

What John would write down through the instruction of Jesus is not only a message for the seven churches in Asia to which they would be addressed, but to us today in our churches. This, as we will see, is instructions and constructive criticism that each church needed to hear. These instructions are not to condemn the churches but to correct their wrongdoings and give them encouragement for repentance and drawing closer to God in their individual lives – just as we need to hear and do today.

Dear LORD,

Please help us, as we read and study what Jesus had to say to these seven churches in Asia, to be aware of the fact that these instructions may be needed in our own lives as well. Please help us to be submissive to Your instructions as You convict our hearts to repentance and Your will for us – in Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
